Sunday Drivers

Description

Sunday Drivers is an album by the Canadian rock combo The Eli Band, released on the Canadian gospel label New Born Records in 1979. The album was recorded by K. Andrews at Circa Sound Studios in Calgary and Sculptures In Sound in Vancouver, Canada; with Bruce Thompson producing, except “Lord of Lords” and “Whatr’e You Gonna Do?” produced by Tom Howard (who also provides keyboards and vocal assistance on the former track). Mixed at Circa Sound Studios.

Eli Band features Jim Reid on lead vocals, Lori Anderson on back-up vocals and acoustic guitar, Ron Badger on guitars and back-up vocals, Don McAreavy on keyboards, Brian Clark on bass, and Blaine Bonner on drums.

Canadian six-person rock outfit with a smidgen of melodic rural progressive, jazzrock, and Southern boogie, not too heavy, not too light, basic line-up underscoring organ, some artful synths, good lead electric guitar. They refer to their musical style as “driving”. Most songs written by guitarist Ron Badger, including «It’s Real», «Victory Road», «You’re Always Around», «What’re You Gonna Do?» and «Joyful Blues». «God Bless You God» is a gorgeous acoustic ballad with female lead vocals. Keyboardist Tom Howard makes an appearance. One of the more rockin’ New Born releases, as well as one of the best. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th edition]
