Description
Another Time… Another Place is an album by the American singer Sandi Patti, released on Word in 1990. Also manufactured and distributed by Epic, a division of Sony Music. The album was engineered by Jeff Balding with Greg Nelson and Sandi Patti Helvering producing.
Most Christian music fans would agree that Sandi Patti possesses one of the most impressive voices in the business, with a range and power that has garnered her the Dove Award for Best Female Vocalist a kazillion times. But there is more to the art of singing than range and power, and this Indianan that Johnny Carson rightly called “a belter” is out to show off a more subtle side on her new album ‘Another Time, Another Place’.
Though Patti was one of the most exciting new talents on the contemporary Christian music scene in the early ’80s, lately her albums have fallen ino a formulaic trap door, both defining the standard for what modern inspirational music would become, and finding herself limited by its rigid boundaries. Something had to be done, and this album is the first step in that most important direction.
Longtime producer Greg Nelson still maintains the helm, but the waters he guides through are filled with pleasant surprises. Gone are the bombastic super-endings, full of key modulation changes and stratospheric high notes. Well, actually there are a couple of “big endings”, but it’s the background chorus who hit the high ones this time, not Patti. Instead, she sings most of these tunes in her mid-and-lower ranges, resulting in a fresh and most enjoyable new approach. Though her phrasing has never lacked in clarity, even more attention has been given to this most quietly important of skills, with great results.
Even the duets are different, sharing the spotlight with the likes of Wayne Watson and Amy Grant instead of other inspirational “belters”. All of this results in an album that should serve to maintain her current fans (since the music is still mellow) and expand to a more solidly adult contemporary sound, endearing her to a broader audience.
The music is top-notch, much of it recorded in Los Angeles by players never seen on a Sandi Patti project before. Unfortunately, most of the tunes themselves are still quite similar to those on previous albums. Perhaps this will be another area warranting a “new look” next time around. All in all, ‘Another Time, Another Place’ is a most encouraging new project from an artist who continues is indeed one of the finest vocalists in Christian music. [Thom Granger, CCM, November 1990]
